FAUN wins VAK Innovation Award

Osterholz-Scharmbeck/Munich. FAUN was awarded 1st place in the VAK Innovation Award 2018 at IFAT for the development of the BLUEPOWER. Zero emission during disposal. With the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles BLUEPOWER, FAUN presents modularly configurable, alternative drive systems for environmentally friendly disposal logistics.

EMISSION-FREE MUNICIPAL VEHICLES

An important, hot topic is the reduction of emissions from municipal vehicles. FAUN is showing two solutions with alternative drives in Munich, which make a valuable contribution to an improved environmental balance in polluted cities and conurbations and herald the waste disposal of tomorrow. For the first time, FAUN is presenting an emission-free vehicle from large-scale production in cooperation with VOLVO. VOLVO supplies the FE electric, the first battery-electric chassis, and FAUN the electric E-ROTOPRESS. This vehicle celebrated its world premiere in Hamburg on 8 May and will go into service with the Hamburg city cleaning service from autumn 2018. The sales launch in Europe is planned from 2019. The scalable battery capacity is used to drive quietly and emission-free and to power the body. The refuse vehicle will be powered by two electric motors with 370 kW maximum power (260 kW continuous power) and a Volvo two-speed transmission. Lithium-ion batteries are used for energy storage.

FAUN presents a new concept under the name BLUEPOWER: A refuse collection vehicle and a sweeper with fuel cell and battery drive. BLUEPOWER is a self-developed electric drive that combines hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology to increase the range. The FAUN BLUEPOWER concept is the stringent further development of the experience gained with the FAUN DUALPOWER since 2006 and is scheduled to enter the test phase in 2019. During household waste collection, a vehicle is stopped very frequently. In densely populated areas, this can be every few metres. With conventional chassis, a lot of braking energy is lost and fine dust is produced during the braking process. The two vehicles presented by FAUN are electrically driven and electrically braked. This means that a large part of the braking energy can be stored in the batteries and used for acceleration. As a result, the vehicle requires up to 40 % less energy, is CO2- and NOx-free and blows less particulate matter into the air. The noise of a conventional refuse collection vehicle is also a thing of the past.
